I found this picture on the Dodgers website back in March. Since this community has been quiet for a while, I figure this would serve as a nice pick-me-up.

OK, so... this isn't exactly the best update, and it's not entirely a surprise, but...

Mueller retires, joins front office
"Bill Mueller became the highest-paid special assistant to the general manager in Dodgers history Friday when he was forced to retire as a player and joined the front office."

Best of luck, Billy.

Mueller Not Giving Up on Comeback
By Steve Henson, Times Staff Writer
August 20, 2006

SAN FRANCISCO — A Kirk Gibson moment would be a longshot, obviously. But a few quality at-bats from the perhaps permanently hobbled Bill Mueller during a pennant race is something the Dodgers hoped might come to pass.

Mueller hasn't given up on the idea. He's with the team, dresses in his uniform and cheers from the dugout.

More importantly, he has taken batting practice in private, testing the balky right knee that has kept him on the disabled list since May 12. Manager Grady Little asked him how it went. So did General Manager Ned Colletti. The answer wasn't encouraging.

"It just didn't respond," Mueller said. "It swells up pretty quick."

He plans to get back in the batting cage before Sept. 1, when the Dodgers roster can be expanded from 25 to 40 players.

"It's worth a try," he said.

Little is crossing his fingers.

"I told him all he has to do is run to first base," he said. "We'll have plenty of guys who can pinch-run."

FYI, Red Sox West (Dodgers/Padres) are battling it out tonight on ESPN2... in a few minutes.

Update [23 Jun 2006|01:53pm]

Mueller's Knee Injury Might Threaten Career
By Steve Henson, Times Staff Writer
June 23, 2006

Bill Mueller's season is in jeopardy - and his career might be as well. The veteran third baseman is scheduled to be at Dodger Stadium today to have his right knee evaluated by the team's medical personnel.

He has been at home in Phoenix rehabilitating from surgery on his right knee more than a month ago. It was his third surgery on the knee in three years and recovery has been slow.
Mueller, 35, has been working with physical therapist Brett Fischer, who helped him rehabilitate from the two previous surgeries to his right knee and one to his left knee.

Dodgers trainer Stan Johnston said Mueller has not responded well to treatment and that he is beginning therapy in a swimming pool to reduce the pressure on the knee. An injury expected to keep Mueller sidelined for a maximum of six weeks appears far more grave.

"He gets to a certain point in treatment and starts getting sore," Johnston said. "He's got degenerative, arthritic changes in his knee. There is cumulative damage from all the procedures."

Could Mueller's career be over?

"That's still up in the air," Johnston said.

Name: Kristen
Age: 17
Location: NJ
Whats your favourtie MLB team[s]: Boston, and I cheer for whomever is playing the yankees
Favourite player[s]: Billy, Damon, Wakefield
Favourite baseballmemory: since I live in NJ, I was surrounded by Yankees fans during ths 2004 ALCS. After the first three games all everyone did was bug me about the Red Sox. When they came back to win, I went into school the next day and sat in my desk, full of pride and watched as every Yankee fan looked glum that morning. Also, that same day. ONe of my teachers who is a huge Red Sox fan put little red sox on all the doors. It made me smile.
How many games do you attend a year: at least two, it is hard to get to Boston from here and getting tickets at Yankees stadium when the Red SOx are in is brutal.
Howd you find us: just happened to look up the name
What do you like best about Billy: I like to think of him as the good-non talkative player. Meaning that he goes out there and does he job well, but sadly does not get enough recognition for his work. He also is a cutey.

Awesome game for Billy [29 Aug 2005|10:17am]

Awesome game for Billy yesterday- truly, a demonstration of the amazing player that he is. Usually, it all slips under the radar, so I was happy to see a big fuss being made over him.

Boston.com has a good article: http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2005/08/29/mueller_outing_fun_to_analyze/

(additionally, NESN currently has a video interview with Billy up on Boston.com)
